Being one of the most awaited festivals of our Chinese culture, we’ve made things extra special and created fun arts and crafts for your little ones to enjoy while learning about the Dragon Boat Festival!

It's a race to the finish line as boats shaped like a dragon dash to the finish line for the Dragon Boat Festival. Devouring delicious dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves and stuffed with sticy rice goodness, it's a big event that is celebrated across Chinese communities of Southeast Asia. Let's make this fun paper craft!

This download contains:

  • One (1) Dragon Boat Craft cutout template

Materials Needed:

  • Paper or Cardstock (orange, red, yellow, or green)
  • Tissue cardboard tube
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Colourful tissue paper (orange, yellow, or red)

Instructions:

  1. Draw dragon scales on a sheet of coloured paper. Make sure the lines are thick so the scales are bold and visible.
  2. Wrap the paper around the tissue cardboard tube. Make four* parallel slits on one side of the toilet roll to place the dumpling racers later.
  3. Take a sheet of coloured cardstock, cut out four identical triangles. Round the edges to resemble a sticky rice dumpling. (See image for reference).  Cut out and stick on the facial features in the cutout templates. Draw lines similar to ones in the image. Colour in green to resemble the bamboo leaves used to wrap sticky rice dumplings.

  4. To prepare the paddles for the dumpling racer to hold, colour and cut them out. Stick them on either side of the dumplings.

  5. Next, slot the dumpling into each of the 4 slots. They are now ready to race!

  6. To make the Dragon Boat, colour in the two dragon heads in the template provided. Cut and stick one head on 1 side of the toilet roll. Then stick the second head parallel to the first. (Make sure you leave space for the dragon to breathe fire through the toilet roll.)

  7. Next, colour in the two dragon tails in the template provided. Cut and stick the tails back-to-back so you can see the dragon tail from both sides.

  8. Next, cut 10 strips of tissue paper into thin strips of 15cm in length. These will be the flames that your dragon will breathe out.

  9. Glue the ends of each strip of tissue paper in between the dragon’s head.

  10. Your fire-breathing dragon is ready! Blow through the tail of the dragon to see your dragon boat breathing fire!
